Strangers on a Train

David saw a tall woman on the platform at London Paddington station. She had dark hair and a beautiful smile. He sat next to her on the train. 'Is that Chopin?' he asked. She said yes — she loved classical music. Her name was Olivia.

They talked for two hours. He told her about his new job in London. She told him about her concert next week. When the train arrived, they bought two coffees at the station. Before she left, she wrote her phone number on a napkin and said 'Call me.'

David sent her a message that night.

Grammar Discovery: past simple with more irregular verbs

Look at these past tense verbs from the story. Can you find the present form?

David saw a woman. → SAW = past of SEE.

He sat next to her. → SAT = past of SIT.

She said 'Call me.' → SAID = past of SAY.

They bought two coffees. → BOUGHT = past of BUY.

She wrote her number. → WROTE = past of WRITE.

He sent a message. → SENT = past of SEND.

Expected answer: These verbs are irregular — the past form doesn't use -ed. You need to memorize each one. But negatives and questions still use did/didn't + base form.

Explain:

How do we make negatives and questions with irregular verbs?

She didn't write her email. (NOT: She didn't wrote) — didn't + base form (write, NOT wrote)

Did they buy coffee? (NOT: Did they bought?) — Did + subject + base form (buy, NOT bought)

Quick Check (oral):

1. Say: "I ___ (see) a beautiful park yesterday."

Expected: saw

If wrong: See → saw in the past.

2. Say: "She ___ (write) a letter to her friend."

Expected: wrote

If wrong: Write → wrote in the past.

3. Say: "Did you ___ (buy) a coffee? (base form!)"

Expected: buy

If wrong: After did/didn't, use the BASE form: buy, not bought.

Explicação (PT-BR):
Mais verbos irregulares no passado: see→saw, sit→sat, say→said, tell→told, buy→bought, leave→left, send→sent, write→wrote. Negativo e pergunta usam did/didn't + verbo base (igual regulares): Did you see? I didn't buy.

Watch for:
- Said pronuncia = /sɛd/ (SED), NAO 'seid'. Erro universal — corrigir desde o inicio.
- Bought pronuncia = /bɔːt/ (BOOT sem o L), NAO 'bou-ght'. O 'gh' e mudo.
- Wrote vs write: aluno pode dizer 'wroted' ou 'writed'. Nao existe — e 'wrote'.
- Told vs said: told PRECISA de objeto (told HER, told HIM). Said NAO precisa: She said 'hello.' (She told 'hello' = ERRADO).
- Left como verbo (leave→left) vs left como direcao (turn left). Mesma palavra, sentidos diferentes.
- Negativo: 'She didn't wrote' = ERRADO. After didn't → BASE FORM: She didn't write.

Present → Past

Match the present form to the past form.

Column A

see

say
buy
leave

Column B
