Grammar Discovery: past simple regular verbs (+ed), didn't + base verb, Did you...? + base verb
Look at these sentences from the blog. What ending do the verbs have? What happens in negative and question sentences?
We wanted to live in New York. → want + ED
We booked the flight. → book + ED
We arrived in March. → arrive + D (ends in E already)
We didn't stay at a hotel. → didn't + STAY (base!)
Did you like it? → Did + you + LIKE (base!)
Explain:
What are the spelling rules for -ed? And what happens after didn't / Did?
work → worked, arrive → arrived, study → studied, stop → stopped — 4 spelling patterns: +ed, +d (ends in e), y→ied, double consonant
I worked. / I didn't work. / Did you work? — Negative and question: verb goes back to BASE form
Quick Check (oral):
1. Say: "Past of 'arrive': ___"
Expected: arrived
If wrong: Ends in E → just add D: arrive → arrived.
2. Say: "She didn't ___ (like) it."
Expected: like
If wrong: After didn't → base verb (no -ed).
3. Say: "___ you book the hotel? (make a question)"
Expected: Did
If wrong: Past question: Did + subject + base verb.
Common Errors
Depois de didn't, use o verbo BASE (sem -ed).
Depois de Did, use o verbo BASE (sem -ed).
Verbos regulares: +ed (worked, not workd).
Passado simples com verbos regulares: adicione -ed ao verbo. Regras de spelling: verb+ed (worked), verb-e+d (liked), consoante+y → ied (studied), CVC → double (stopped). Negativa: didn't + verbo base. Pergunta: Did + sujeito + verbo base?
Practice
15 minutes- Pronuncia do -ed: /t/ (worked, liked, packed), /d/ (arrived, rented), /ɪd/ (wanted, decided, started). NAO ensinar regra fonetica, mas modelar a pronuncia correta.
- didn't + -ed: 'I didn't worked' e o erro #1. Reforcar: didn't + verbo BASE, sem -ed. Same for Did you.
- Spelling: stop → stopped (dobra consoante), study → studied (y→ied), like → liked (e mudo → +d). Drill no quadro.
- Blog post: ler em voz alta primeiro, depois silencioso. Verificar compreensao ANTES de focar em gramatica.
- Dialogo: Ana conta a viagem de uma AMIGA (3a pessoa). Verificar se aluno entende 'she traveled' (nao 'I traveled').
- Roleplay: estimular respostas reais. Se o aluno nao viajou recentemente, aceitar 'No, I didn't' e pedir sobre fim de semana.
