Language Focus
12 minutesGrammar Discovery: simple present 3rd person (he/she/it): works, teaches, doesn't, does...?
Look at these pairs. What changes when we go from I to she/he?
I work. → She works.
I teach. → He teaches.
I don't work. → She doesn't work.
Do you work? → Does she work?
Yes, I do. → Yes, he does.
Explain:
What happens to the verb with he/she/it?
I work → She works — Add S to the verb
I teach → He teaches — Verbs ending in CH/SH/S/X/O → add ES
She doesn't work / Does she work? — With doesn't/does, verb goes back to base form (no S)
Quick Check (oral):
1. Say: "She ___ in a hospital. (work / works)"
Expected: works
If wrong: He/she/it + verb with S: she WORKS.
2. Say: "He ___ Spanish. (teach / teaches)"
Expected: teaches
If wrong: Teach ends in CH → add ES: teaches.
3. Say: "___ she like her job? (Do / Does)"
Expected: Does
If wrong: Questions with he/she/it use DOES, not DO.
Na 3a pessoa (he/she/it), o verbo ganha S: I work → she works, I teach → he teaches. Negativa: she doesn't work (verbo volta ao infinitivo). Pergunta: Does she work? (verbo volta ao infinitivo). Resposta: Yes, she does. / No, she doesn't.
Practice
15 minutes- 'She work' sem S — erro mais comum. Reforcar: he/she/it = verbo + S
- 'Does she works?' — duplo S. Com DOES o verbo volta a forma base: Does she WORK?
- 'She don't' em vez de 'She doesn't' — DON'T e para I/you/we/they. DOESN'T para he/she/it
- Pronuncia de 'teaches' — /TII-tchiz/ com o Z final, nao /TII-tchis/
- Pronuncia de 'works' — /UERKS/ o W inicial e importante, nao e 'orks'
- 'Nurse' — /NERS/ nao /NURSI/. O U faz som de ER
