Language Focus
12 minutesGrammar Discovery: telling the time (o'clock, half past, quarter after/to) + feelings with I'm
Look at these clock times. When do we say AFTER? When do we say TO?
3:00 → It's three o'clock.
3:15 → It's quarter AFTER three.
3:30 → It's half past three.
3:45 → It's quarter TO four.
3:10 → It's ten AFTER three.
3:50 → It's ten TO four.
Explain:
How do we say how we feel in English?
I'm tired. — I'm + adjective = Eu estou + adjetivo
I'm hungry. — Same pattern: I'm + hungry/cold/hot/thirsty
Quick Check (oral):
1. Say: "6:15 = ___ after six (quarter / half)"
Expected: quarter
If wrong: 15 minutes = quarter (1/4 of an hour).
2. Say: "6:30 = ___ past six (quarter / half)"
Expected: half
If wrong: 30 minutes = half (1/2 of an hour).
3. Say: "6:45 = quarter ___ seven (after / to)"
Expected: to
If wrong: 45 minutes = quarter TO the next hour.
Horas: 3:00 = three o'clock, 3:15 = quarter after three, 3:30 = half past three, 3:45 = quarter to four. 'After' para primeiros 30 min, 'to' para ultimos 30 min. Sentimentos: I'm + adjetivo (tired, hungry, cold, hot, thirsty).
Practice
15 minutes- 'Half past' — aluno pode dizer 'half TO'. Reforcar: half PAST = e meia (30 min depois da hora)
- 'Quarter' — a pronuncia /kw/ e dificil. Exagerar: KUOR-ter, nao 'corter'
- Confusao AFTER vs TO: AFTER = primeiros 30 min (hora avanca). TO = ultimos 30 min (proxima hora)
- 'I am hungry' vs 'I have hunger' — calque do portugues. Em ingles e I'M + adjetivo
- Pronuncia de 'hour' — o H e mudo! /AU-er/, nao /RROU-er/
- 'Hurry' — /RRER-ri/, H aspirado. Nao confundir com 'hungry'
