Grammar Discovery: demonstratives: this/that (singular) + these/those (plural) + How much is/are...?

Look at these sentences. What's the difference between THIS and THAT? And THESE and THOSE?

THIS T-shirt (here, on the table) → singular, close

THAT map (there, on the wall) → singular, far

THESE key chains (here, on the table) → plural, close

THOSE caps (there, on the shelf) → plural, far

Expected answer: This/That = singular. These/Those = plural. This/These = close. That/Those = far.

Explain:

How do we ask about prices?

How much IS this T-shirt? — Singular → IS

How much ARE these key chains? — Plural → ARE

Quick Check (oral):

1. Say: "How much ___ this T-shirt? (is / are)"

Expected: is

If wrong: This = singular → IS.

2. Say: "How much ___ those caps? (is / are)"

Expected: are

If wrong: Those = plural → ARE.

3. Say: "___ key chains here on the table. (This / These)"

Expected: These

If wrong: Plural + close = THESE.

Common Errors

How much is these key chains? How much are these key chains?
Plural (these/those) → ARE. Singular (this/that) → IS.
Explicação (PT-BR):
This = perto, singular. That = longe, singular. These = perto, plural. Those = longe, plural. How much IS (singular) / How much ARE (plural).

Practice

15 minutes
Watch for:
- This/That/These/Those: use REAL objects. Pen on table (here) → 'this pen'. Point to door (there) → 'that door'. Two pens (here) → 'these pens'. Point to windows → 'those windows'. Student needs to FEEL the distance.
- 'How much IS' vs 'How much ARE': IS = singular, ARE = plural. Same be rule.
- 'Each': new word in the dialogue. Teach as expression: 'each = cada um'. Don't go deeper.
- 'Please': Brazilian tends to forget 'please' when asking. Reinforce: always say please when you want something.
- Budget roleplay: if student spends over $30, say 'Sorry, that's $35. You only have $30!' Student recalculates.
