Common Errors
Em PT 'quanto custa' não muda. Em EN: plural (these/those) → ARE. Singular (this/that) → IS.
THIS é singular (1 item). THESE é plural (2+ itens). Caps tem -s → plural → THESE caps.
This = perto, singular. That = longe, singular. These = perto, plural. Those = longe, plural. How much IS (singular) / How much ARE (plural).
Practice
15 minutes- This/That/These/Those: use REAL objects. Pen on table (here) → 'this pen'. Point to door (there) → 'that door'. Two pens (here) → 'these pens'. Point to windows → 'those windows'. Student needs to FEEL the distance.
- 'How much IS' vs 'How much ARE': IS = singular, ARE = plural. Same be rule.
- 'Each': new word in the dialogue. Teach as expression: 'each = cada um'. Don't go deeper.
- 'Please': Brazilian tends to forget 'please' when asking. Reinforce: always say please when you want something.
- Budget roleplay: if student spends over $30, say 'Sorry, that's $35. You only have $30!' Student recalculates.
