Grammar: demonstratives: this/that (singular) + these/those (plural) + How much is/are...?

FormStructure
AffirmativeTHIS ___ + singular CLOSE (this T-shirt). THAT ___ + singular FAR (that map). THESE + plural CLOSE (these key chains). THOSE + plural FAR (those caps).
NegativeIt's not this/that ___. They aren't these/those ___. (Ex: It's not that map, it's that postcard.)
InterrogativeHow much IS this/that ___? (singular). How much ARE these/those ___? (plural). It's $X. / They're $X each.

Examples:

This T-shirt is $15.

That map is $3.

These key chains are $5 each.

Those caps are $10.

Try it!

1. How much this T-shirt?
2. How much those caps?
3. key chains here on the table are $5.
4. How much is map on the wall?

Common Errors

How much is these key chains? How much are these key chains?
Em PT 'quanto custa' não muda. Em EN: plural (these/those) → ARE. Singular (this/that) → IS.
This caps These caps
THIS é singular (1 item). THESE é plural (2+ itens). Caps tem -s → plural → THESE caps.
Explicação (PT-BR):
This = perto, singular. That = longe, singular. These = perto, plural. Those = longe, plural. How much IS (singular) / How much ARE (plural).

Practice

15 minutes
Watch for:
- This/That/These/Those: use REAL objects. Pen on table (here) → 'this pen'. Point to door (there) → 'that door'. Two pens (here) → 'these pens'. Point to windows → 'those windows'. Student needs to FEEL the distance.
- 'How much IS' vs 'How much ARE': IS = singular, ARE = plural. Same be rule.
- 'Each': new word in the dialogue. Teach as expression: 'each = cada um'. Don't go deeper.
- 'Please': Brazilian tends to forget 'please' when asking. Reinforce: always say please when you want something.
- Budget roleplay: if student spends over $30, say 'Sorry, that's $35. You only have $30!' Student recalculates.

Let's Talk

13 minutes

Let's Talk!

Use what you learned today to answer these questions. Elaborate as much as you can!

Real things, real prices — using demonstratives in your own world.

1. Show me 3 things you can see right now. Use 'this' (close to you) or 'that' (far from you), and tell me what they are.

Follow-up: How much was it? Or — guess the price!

Target: This is my ___. / That is a ___.
Expected answer: This is my phone. That is a window. These are my keys.
Tip: Force student to physically point and choose this/that based on distance. Bonus: ask for prices to recycle 'How much...?' organically.

2. Is $15 expensive for a T-shirt?

Follow-up: How much is a T-shirt in Brazil?

Target: Yes, it's expensive. / No, it's cheap.
Expected answer: Yes. / No, it's cheap.
Tip: Recycle adjectives: expensive/cheap. Connect to real prices BR vs US.

3. Imagine you're at a souvenir shop in your city. What 3 things would you buy for a tourist friend? Use 'this' or 'these'.

Follow-up: Why? What's special about it?

Target: I would buy this mug, these key chains, and this map.
Expected answer: This mug. These key chains.
Tip: Free productive — student picks souvenirs from BR (Christ Redeemer mug, açaí key chain, capybara T-shirt). Push for 3 items + reason. Mix singular/plural.

4. Look around the room and ask me about the price of 2 things — use 'How much is this/that?' or 'How much are these/those?'

Follow-up: Hmm, let me think... that's $40! Cheap or expensive?

Target: How much is that lamp? How much are those books?
Expected answer: How much is that?
Tip: Reverse role — student ASKS, teacher answers with random prices. Forces production of How much is/are + this/that/these/those. Loop 2-3 items.
Extension activity: Aluno rapido: criar sua propria 'loja' com precos. Professor e o cliente. Aluno vende e calcula total.
