Grammar: a/an + singular and plural nouns

FormStructure
AffirmativeIt's ___ + singular noun. They're + plural noun. Use A antes de consoante (a phone, a book) e AN antes de vogal (an umbrella, an email).
NegativeIt's not ___ + singular. They aren't + plural. (Ex: It's not a pen. They aren't keys.)
InterrogativeWhat is it? → It's a/an ___. What are they? → They're ___.

Examples:

It's a phone. It's an umbrella.

They're keys. They're glasses.

What is it? It's a charger.

What are they? They're sunglasses.

Try it!

1. It's pen.
2. It's email.
3. What they? They're keys.
4. one bus → two

Common Errors

a umbrella an umbrella
Em PT 'um/uma' não muda. Em EN, AN antes de som de vogal: an umbrella, an email, an address.
two glass two glasses
Plural EN obrigatório: -s ou -es. Palavras terminadas em -s/-ss/-sh/-ch ganham -ES: glass → glasses, bus → buses.
Explicação (PT-BR):
A = antes de som de consoante (a pen, a book). AN = antes de som de vogal (an umbrella, an email). Plural: +s (keys, pens) ou +es (glasses, buses).

Practice

15 minutes
Watch for:
- No dialogue in this lesson — compensate with real objects. Bring extras: umbrella, glasses, charger if possible.
- A vs AN: rule is by SOUND, not letter. 'An umbrella' (vowel), 'a university' (sound /j/ = consonant). For Starter, simplify: 'an + a/e/i/o/u'.
- Plural irregulars: 'glasses' is already plural (no 'a glass' for eyeglasses — 'a glass' = cup). 'Sunglasses' same.
- 'They're' for plural objects (keys, glasses). Brazilian finds it strange: 'keys don't have gender!' Explain: 'plural things = they'.
- Pronunciation: wallet /wɑːlɪt/, charger /tʃɑːrdʒər/, umbrella /ʌmˈbrɛlə/.

Let's Talk

13 minutes

Let's Talk!

Use what you learned today to answer these questions. Elaborate as much as you can!

Talking about objects in your life — beyond the bag.

1. What's in your bedroom? Tell me 5 things.

Follow-up: An umbrella in your bedroom?! Why?

Target: There's a bed, a phone, a book, an umbrella, and glasses.
Expected answer: A bed. A phone.
Tip: Different from 'bag' (which is the roleplay). Forces a/an + plurals in NEW context. Count to 5 — push for variety. Recycle 'There's' (preview L11 family/L29 there is).

2. Do you ever lose things? What do you lose, and where do you find it?

Follow-up: Same place every time?! Maybe THAT's the place!

Target: I lose my keys / phone / glasses. I find them in my bag / on the table.
Expected answer: I lose my keys.
Tip: Connect to the text 'Top 8 things people lose'. Model: 'I lose my keys every day! And I find them in the kitchen.' Build student to 2 sentences (lose + find).

3. Look around the room right now. Name 4 things you can see — use a, an, or a plural.

Follow-up: Cool — and what's your favorite thing in this room?

Target: I can see a chair, a window, an air conditioner, and books.
Expected answer: A chair. A book.
Tip: Free productive task — push student to look up and notice. Force a/an choice (vowel sound!) + plurals. Reuse vocab from any earlier lesson (book/chair/window/door/computer).

4. What do you take to work or school every day? Tell me 3 things you carry.

Follow-up: Three things only?! What about your wallet?

Target: I take my phone, my keys, and a notebook. I carry them in my bag.
Expected answer: My phone. My keys.
Tip: Push to 3 items + add WHERE (in my bag / in my pocket). Recycle vocab da aula. If student hesitates: prompt 'phone? wallet? charger?' to model.
Extension activity: Aluno rapido: descrever TODOS os objetos na sala usando 'a/an' e 'singular/plural'. Memory game: teacher shows 8 objects for 30 seconds, covers them, student lists from memory.
